You will provide informed advice to regulated parties and members of the public regarding their actions to protect Alberta's environment and public health. Working within Alberta's environmental legislation, you will take a solutions-oriented approach in addressing and managing environmental challenges. You will consult, provide advice/direction and take steps to enforce legislation when required. In your role, you will respond to public complaints on a variety of issues, and assess compliance with the applicable legislation, and assess and respond to environmental incidents, collect evidence to determine if a contravention has occurred, and conduct reactive inspections to assess regulatory compliance.
Working as part of the Compliance Team as an entry-level Environmental Protection Officer, you may be assigned incident management, desktop audits, investigative, and inspection duties. You will apply the principles of Education, Prevention and Enforcement found in the compliance assurance framework to achieve compliance with the legislation administered by the Department. You will deal with the resolution of a wide variety of environmental issues by assessing environmental incidents and by conducting proactive and reactive inspections to assess regulatory compliance.

About Your Work Environment:
You will be working out of an office located in various locations across the province including, but not limited to; Bonnyville, Fort McMurray, Whitecourt, Hinton, Grande Prairie, Peace River and Lac La Biche.
Travel and field work within the Region may be required. You will have regular contact with department staff, other government departments, municipalities, agencies, stakeholders, members of the public, special interest groups and the media.
Qualifications
Minimum Educational and Experience Requirements:
- A two-year technical diploma in Environmental Sciences supplemented by a minimum of two years directly related experience or four-year degree in Environmental Sciences (or related field)
Additional Requirements:
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs
- Must be able to work without supervision
- Must have a valid driver’s license
Assets:
- Experience in the direct application of the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act, Water Act and Public Lands Act is preferred.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite is essential. Equivalencies will be considered.
- Experience in regulatory inspection and/or investigation processes and techniques are required.
- Transferable skills, experience, education and alignment with Government of Alberta values may be considered.

Salary
$2,268.66 to $ 2,971.22 bi-weekly ($59,212 - $77,548/year).
Notes
This is a 24-month temporary employment opportunity expected to end August 31, 2025. Various locations across the province including but not limited to; Bonnyville, Fort McMurray, Whitecourt, Hinton, Grande Prairie, Peace River and Lac La Biche.

Working and Living in Fort McMurray:
- 1. Attraction Bonus: The attraction bonus is a one-time payment that is equivalent to 25% of base pay (bi-weekly pay X 26.1 X 25%) upon commencement, less all lawful deductions. The attraction bonus is paid on a quarterly basis over the first year of employment. This bonus is only available for the Fort McMurray positions.
- 2. Fort McMurray Allowance: The Fort McMurray Allowance provides eligible employees with $478.17 for each bi-weekly pay period served in addition to their regular earnings. The allowance is non-pensionable compensation. This allowance is only available to the Fort McMurray positions.
Working and Living in Peace River and Grande Prairie:
- 55th to 57th parallels retention allowance: This is an annual retention bonus of $6,000.00, less all lawful deductions, the payment will be made in 2 installments per year and shall be pro-rated based on the employee's commencement date. This allowance is only available to the Peace River and Grande Prairie positions.
